Description: Learn how to read the cloud icon in the Shift4 Venue header and what to do for each network status.
Check the Network Status Icon
The cloud icon (also called the network status icon or connection indicator) in the Shift4 Venue POS header shows whether your device can reliably communicate with the application. Use it to recognize when connectivity may affect online tasks, such as syncing or retrieving current data.
Respond to Each Network Status
| Status | What It Means | What to Do |
| Online | The device is communicating reliably with the POS application. | No action is needed. |
| Fair | The connection works but is slower or less consistent than usual. | Continue working and watch for changes. If the status persists, check your venue network. |
| Weak | Your device is connected, but responses are slow enough that online tasks may take longer. | Confirm your device has a usable network connection. If the status continues, contact your IT team. |
| Intermittent | Recent checks show the connection has dropped or recovered. The device may work now, but it has not been reliable. | Do not expect online tasks to complete immediately. Check your Wi-Fi or cellular coverage. If the status does not stabilize, contact your IT team. |
| Offline | The most recent connection check could not reach the POS application. | Treat online functions as unavailable. Follow your venue's offline operating process and check the device's network connection. |
| Syncing | The app is currently uploading or reconciling data. This display takes priority while synchronization is active. | Wait for the sync to finish. |
| Offline Only | The device has been intentionally placed in the app’s Offline Only operating mode. This is an operating mode, not proof that the network has failed. | Follow your venue's approved Offline Only process. Only a manager or support team member should change this mode, and only when appropriate. |
Know What the Network Status Icon Measures
- The icon shows your device's recent ability to reach the POS application.
- The icon does not guarantee that every external service, payment device, website, or local network resource is working.
- The icon keeps recent connection history, so a short dropout stays visible instead of being hidden right away.
Important: Offline and Offline Only are different. Offline means the current connection check failed. Offline Only means the app was set to operate in that mode.
Note: Your device may briefly show Intermittent after it reconnects. This is expected.
Note: On smaller screens, the cloud icon appears without the status word. Use the icon's color and shape to identify the status.
Troubleshoot a Network Status Issue
Record the displayed status, the time, device/location, and whether the issue is continuous or comes and goes.
For Fair, Weak, or Intermittent, check basic venue connectivity and whether nearby devices have the same issue.
For Offline, verify the device connection and use the approved offline workflow if needed.
If the status conflicts with the observed behavior or persists, capture the Network view from the app’s Debug Info screen and provide it to Support or Engineering.
