Shift4 Venue allows you to create Open Modifiersβ€”a flexible option that lets employees add custom notes to specific items during the ordering process. These notes appear as an open text field on the POS and will print on both kitchen chits and customer receipts.

βš™οΈ Configuration Notes

  • An Open Modifier must be in its own Modifier Groupβ€”it cannot be grouped with other modifiers.
  • The Modifier Group must be attached to each item that requires the open modifier.
  • All Open Modifiers should have a $0 price.

πŸ› οΈ How to Create an Open Modifier

Step 1: Create the Modifier Item

  1. Log in to Canopy 2.0 >Β Menu Manager
  2. Navigate to Menus > Items

  3. Click the βž• Plus Icon in the upper-right corner

Fill Out the Item Details:

  • πŸ–ŠοΈ Name: Open Modifier
  • πŸ–₯️ Display Name: Open Modifier
  • πŸ“ Description: Open Modifier
  • πŸ“¦ Inventory Classification: Leave blank
  • πŸ”’ SKU: Assign a unique SKU
  • πŸ“‡ Barcode: Leave blank
  • πŸ“Ά Availability: Set to Available
  • πŸ–ΌοΈ Item Image: Leave blank
  • πŸ“‹ Menus: Add to all menus where it will be used
  • πŸ’° Price: Enter $0.00
  • 🧾 Tax: Leave blank
  • πŸ”“ Classification: Toggle Open Modifier ON
  • πŸ“ Categories:
    • Display Categories: Leave blank
    • Reporting Categories: Choose as needed
  • Min / Max Per Order: Leave blank
  • Add Modifier Groups: Leave blank for now

Step 2: Create the Modifier Group

Create a new Modifier Group that includes only the Open Modifier item you just created.

Step 3: Attach Modifier Group to Item

Attach the Open Modifier Group to the item(s) where it should appear. You can use the same article above to guide you.


🧾 Using Open Modifiers on POS

  1. On the POS, add the item to the cart.
  2. Tap the item name in the cart to open the modifier drawer.
    • πŸ’‘ If the item already has required modifiers, the drawer will open automatically.
  3. You'll see the Add Special Instructions box.
  4. Tap the box, type in your custom note, and press Update.
