Description: Learn how to create a new item by duplicating an existing item in Canopy Menu Manager.

Create a new item faster by starting from an existing item. When you duplicate an item, Canopy fills in supported settings, such as pricing, tax configuration, categories, and Menu assignments. You can review and change them before you save. For example, duplicate a Chicken Sandwich item to create a Spicy Chicken Sandwich, then change the name, price, and stock keeping unit (SKU).

Duplicate an Item

  1. Log in to Canopy 2.0 and select your venue.
  2. Select Menus > Items.
  3. Find the item you want to duplicate. Use Search if needed.
  4. Select the Copy Item icon (two overlapping squares) at the far right of the item row. The Create Item form opens with supported settings already filled in.
Canopy Menu Manager Items list for VN Arena showing the Copy Item button at the far right of each item row, with Copy Item tooltip on the Chicken Sandwich row.
  5. Review the copied settings and update the item name and other details.
  6. Enter a new, unique Product SKU.
  7. Select Save.

Important: You must enter a unique Product SKU before you save the new item.

Note: Duplicating an item does not change the original item. If you leave the form without saving, Canopy does not create a new item.

Information Copied to the New Item

Canopy copies the following supported item settings. You can review and change the filled-in values before you save.

SettingWhat Canopy Does
Internal and Display NamesCopies the names and adds "Copy" to the end of each one.
DescriptionCopies the description.
Inventory ClassificationCopies the classification.
Base PriceCopies the base price.
Open Price ConfigurationCopies the setting and keeps the open-price behavior.
Price LevelsCopies the assigned Price Levels and their configured prices.
Discountable and Alcohol SettingsCopies both settings.
Tax ConfigurationCopies the tax settings based on your venue's configured tax model.
Display CategoriesCopies the assigned categories.
Reporting CategoriesCopies the assigned categories.
Menu AssignmentsCopies the assignments and keeps the original Revenue Center scope.

Information Not Copied to the New Item

Canopy clears or skips some information so the new item can have its own identity and configuration.

SettingWhat Canopy Does
Product SKULeaves the field blank. Enter a unique SKU before you save.
Barcode / Universal Product Code (UPC)Leaves the field blank.
External Reference IDLeaves the field blank.
Item ImageDoes not copy the image. Upload an image separately if the item needs one.
Modifier Group AssignmentsDoes not copy the assignments. Add them separately.
Direct Discount AssignmentsDoes not copy the assignments. Review the item's Discount eligibility after you create it.
AvailabilityResets to Null instead of copying the original item's setting.

Review the New Item Before You Save

Before you select Save, confirm the following on the new item:

  • The item name is clear, and the Product SKU is unique.
  • The base price, Price Levels, and tax configuration are correct.
  • The Display Categories, Reporting Categories, and Menu assignments are correct. You can add or remove copied category and Menu assignments without changing the original item.
  • The Menus and Revenue Centers are the ones you want.
  • The item image is correct, if the item uses one. Upload the image separately because Canopy does not copy it.

Make the New Item Available for Sale

  1. Select Menus > Items and find the new item.
  2. Open the item and confirm its details and Menu assignments.
  3. Update Availability to the setting you want when the item is ready for sale.

Important: Canopy resets the duplicate's Availability to Null instead of copying the original item's Availability. Set the Availability before you offer the item for sale.

Check Discounts and Modifier Groups

Canopy copies the Discountable setting but does not copy direct item-specific Discount assignments. A duplicate can still qualify for a category-based Discount if its copied Display Categories meet that Discount's rules. Review your Discounts to confirm the new item is eligible.

Canopy does not copy Modifier Group assignments. After you create the item, add any Modifier Groups the item needs.
