Description: Learn to create, view, and edit items in Shift4 Venue. Items represent products or services available for purchase at a revenue center.

Create an Item

Open a browser and go to your organization's menu management page. The URL follows this format: your-instance-menu.ordernext.com (replace your-instance with your actual instance name).

  1. On the left menu, select Items.
  2. Select the blue + button in the top-right corner. A panel appears on the right side of the screen.

Fill Out Item Details

Name

  • Name — The internal name used for reporting.
  • Display Name — What guests or cashiers see on the menu. This can match the internal name.

Description (Optional)

  • Used only for Mobile, Delivery, or Kiosk menus.
  • Use this field to describe the item to guests (for example, "Spicy grilled chicken with avocado salsa").

SKU

  • Enter a unique SKU for each item.
  • Reusing SKUs can cause issues. To verify existing SKUs:
    1. Go to your-instance-datanow.ordernext.com.
    2. Under Reports, select Venue Config.
    3. View either Item Configurations by Menu or Active Global Items.

Note: If using a third-party inventory system, confirm that item SKUs match that system's requirements.

Set Item Availability

Choose how and when the item appears on menus:

  • Available — The item is visible and orderable on all menus.
  • Low on Inventory — The item remains active for existing orders, then hides on all service types.
  • Unavailable — The item is removed from all menus and does not print on kitchen chits.

Add Additional Item Details

Item Image (Optional)

Menus

  • Select at least one menu to assign the item to.

Price

  • Set the item's cost.
  • Select whether the item is open-priced. Open-priced items allow managers to override the price in Shift4 Venue and enter a custom dollar amount or name.

Tax Settings

  • Configure any applicable tax rules for the item.

Alcohol (Optional)

  • Enable if the item is alcohol-related. This setting supports age restrictions, item limits, and exclusions from discounts.

Discountable (Optional)

  • Enable if the item is eligible for discounts.

Fast Fulfill (Optional)

  • Enable for items that do not need to print to the kitchen when using Mobile, Delivery, or Kiosk.

Categories

  • Display Category — Required for all non-modifier items.
  • Reporting Category — Required. Used for reporting purposes.

Warning: Selecting multiple Display Categories duplicates the item on the menu.

Min/Max Per Order (Optional)

  • Set the maximum number of times an item can be added to a cart, or set a minimum so the item is always added automatically.

Modifier Groups (Optional)

  • Assign Modifier Groups to the item. This designates the item as a Parent Item.
  • When a guest or cashier selects the Parent Item, any optional or required modifiers from the assigned Modifier Groups become available at checkout.

Save the Item

  1. After completing all applicable fields, select Add Item.

The item is now ready to appear on your selected menus.
