This article explains how to manage and sort Display Categories and items in Menu Manager. Display Categories are used to group similar items on the POS, Kiosk, and Mobile Ordering platforms. You can adjust the sequence of each category and its items globally using the Menu Manager feature. Follow the steps below to understand Display Category attributes and how to sort them.

Note: Any changes made to the order of categories and items will affect all menus globally within the selected venue. Separate sort orders for Display Categories and Global Items on a per-menu basis are not supported



Display Category Attributes:

  1. Name:
    This is the internal name assigned to the Display Category, used within Menu Manager and for sales reporting purposes.

  2. Display Name:
    The name that customers will see across different interfaces such as POS, Mobile Ordering, and Self-Checkout menus.

  3. POS Hex Color:
    You can select a Hex color code for each item within a Display Category. If left empty, the POS system will assign a default color. The box to the right of the field provides a preview of how the buttons will look with the chosen Hex color. Ensure the "$" symbol is visible for readability by cashiers.

    Note: To ensure the Hex code is valid, always include the "#" symbol before entering the code.

  4. Items:
    This section allows you to assign items to a Display Category. Check the corresponding box to assign an item. Assigned items will display a blue checkmark.


 

Creating a Display Category:

  1. Access Menu Manager Display Categories by going to your instance-menu.ordernext.com
  2. In Menu Manager, select the Menus drop-down on the left side of the screen.
  3. Choose Display Categories from the list.
  4. Select the Blue Plus Icon in the upper-right corner.
  5. The Add a Display Category panel will appear on the right side.
  6. Enter a Name for the new Display Category.
  7. Enter a Display Name for the new Display Category.
    1. Optionally you can enter a POS Hex Color.If none is entered the Hex Color will default to the SkyTab Venue presets.
  8. Select Items to assign your new Display Category to a list of items.

Note: This is not a required selection to save the new category. You can create the Display Category and assign the category when creating new items or editing them. 

  • Search for specific items,
  • Scroll through All Items to find items, or
  • Use the Selected Items button to remove unwanted items.
  1. Once you have finished editing, select Save to update the Add a Display Category panel.
  2. Return to the Add a Display Category panel and then select Save to create your Display Category, or select the X to cancel.

 


 

How to Sort Display Categories and Items:

  1. In Menu Manager, navigate to Menus > Display Categories.
  2. Click the "Sort" button in the upper-right corner.
    • Note: If the Sort button is disabled and an orange banner is displayed at the top of the screen, contact support at venuesupport@shift4.com to enable sorting. Enabling this feature will disable sorting in Menu Manager.
  3. You will see a list of Display Categories. To reorder them:
    • Click and hold the Display Category, then drag it to the desired position.
    • Note: Sorting is done globally across all menus, so any sorting you do will update the Display Category/Item to the order you set it to globally. 
    • Additionally: The Display Category/Item on top of the drawer will be what appears first or on top when presented to the cashier/customer.
  4. To sort items within each Display Category:
    • Click the expander arrow next to the category to expand it.
    • Locate the item you want to reorder, then click and drag it to the desired position.
  5. After arranging the categories and items, click "Save" to apply the changes globally.
