🗂️ How to Manage and Sort Display Categories in Menu Manager

Display Categories help organize similar items into sections (like “Snacks,” “Drinks,” or “Entrees”) on your POS, Kiosk, and Mobile Ordering menus. You can also control the order these categories (and the items inside them) appear—making it easier for guests and staff to navigate.



🧾 What Are Display Categories?

Each Display Category has the following attributes:

  • Name (Internal): Used for sales reports and behind-the-scenes configuration.

  • Display Name: This is what your guests and cashiers see (e.g., "Burgers" or "Beverages").

  • POS Hex Color: Choose a custom color for how the category buttons appear on the POS.

    ⚠️ Tip: Use a # before the color code (like #FF5733). Leave it blank to use default SkyTab Venue colors.
    💡 Pro Tip: Make sure the $ icon shows clearly for cashier readability.

  • Items: The products that belong in the category. Once assigned, they’ll show a blue checkmark.



➕ How to Create a Display Category

  1. Go to yourvenue-menu.ordernext.com

  2. In Menu Manager, click the Menus dropdown and select Display Categories

  3. Click the blue + icon in the top-right corner

  4. Fill out the following:

    • Name (Internal use)

    • Display Name (What customers see)

    • POS Hex Color (Optional – use a hex code like #123ABC)

    • Select items to include in this category now, or you can add them later

      • Search for specific items

      • Scroll to browse items

      • Use the Selected Items tab to review or remove

  5. Click Save to finish

📝 Note: You don’t need to assign items right away. You can always add them when creating or editing items later.

🔃 How to Sort Display Categories & Items

  1. From Menu Manager, go to Menus > Display Categories

  2. Click the Sort button in the top-right

⚠️ Don’t see the Sort option? If it’s grayed out and there’s an orange banner at the top of the screen, email venuesupport@shift4.com to enable sorting. (Enabling this disables sorting in Canopy 1.0.)

  1. Drag and drop Display Categories into the order you want them to appear globally

    This will change the order across all menus in the venue

  2. To reorder items within a category:

    • Click the arrow next to a Display Category to expand it

    • Drag the items into your preferred sequence

  3. Click Save to apply changes globally

🧠 Reminder: Whatever you place at the top will be shown first on POS, Kiosk, and Mobile.
