Description: Learn to manually update the application on a PAX Q20 device when automatic updates fail or when directed by Shift4 support. This article also covers how to resolve the "Trans Remain in DB" error, which appears when the terminal has unsynced transactions that must be cleared before completing the update.

Update the Device

  1. Ensure there is no active transaction.
  2. From the home screen displaying the PAX logo, tap all four corners of the screen in a clockwise sequence starting with the top-left corner. A beep sounds after each tap.

Enter the Terminal Password

When prompted, enter the password. The password is either the current date in MMDDYYYY format or 08485488.

Warning: Do not share the terminal password externally or store it in merchant-facing content.

Navigate to System Settings

  1. From the terminal menu, select System Settings.
  2. Select App Management.
  3. Re-enter the same password when prompted.

Update the Application

Select App Update to begin the manual update.

Resolve the "Trans Remain in DB" Error

If "Trans Remain in DB" appears after selecting App Update, the terminal has unsynced transactions stored. Ensure all offline approvals are synced, then complete the following steps.

  1. Access the terminal menu and enter the password.
  2. Select System Settings > Database.
  3. Enter the password again.
  4. Select Clear Database, then select Yes to confirm.
  5. Select the back arrow, then select Clear Offline and confirm by selecting Yes.

Repeat the app update steps to complete the manual update.
