Summary: Available in POS version 2.55 and higher, this feature allows staff to move selected items from an open tab to a new tab. It supports a variety of scenarios, including separate payments, corrections, and specialized handling like spill or comp tabs. Splitting a tab can be done without manager approval and is supported in both front bar and back bar configurations.

Use Cases

  • Pay for specific items using different payment methods (e.g., non-alcoholic items on a corporate card, alcoholic items on a personal card).
  • Correct mistakes from adding items to the wrong tab.
  • Enable multiple guests to pay separately and add individual tips.
  • Start a manager tab for voiding spills or comps at the end of the night.
  • Change payment type on an open tab by moving items to a new one.

How It Works

Split Tab Option

  • Accessible from Order Details on open tabs.

  • Allows selection of some or all items to move to a new tab.

  • Supports multi-select and single-select for identical items.

New Tab Creation Flow

The process mirrors opening a new tab and respects the Require Card Payment to Open Tab setting.

Payment Options:

  • Authorize a new card:
    • Tab name is pre-filled with the cardholder name.
  • Add payment later (if card not required):
    • Tab name is pre-filled as "Original Tab Name 2", "Original Tab Name 3", etc., with editable option.
  • Use existing authorized card:
    • Original authorization remains with the initial tab.
    • New authorization is created for the split tab.
    • Tab name defaults as above and can be renamed.

Additional Rules

  • Splitting does not require manager approval.
  • Works in both front bar and back bar configurations.
  • A tab can only be split once per transaction but may be split again in future actions.
  • Supported while offline, as long as the tab has not synced to the platform.
  • Split tab order numbers will use the following format - Order 123456, Order 123456-1G1, Order 123456-3XG, etc.
