Open Modifier - Item Notes

This article will go through creating the Open Modifier special item type in Canopy Classic and the different setup types with Modifier Groups.

Explanation of Open Modifiers:

Creating the Open Modifier special item type allows you to add item notes to items that contain pre-existing modifiers or more than one existing modifier group.

    • This allows special notes or requirements to be entered on a line item where a modifier may not exist for that request. Then this would print those special notes on the Chits under each line item.

    • There are two ways to apply the Open Modifier Item to an existing item.

      • The first way would be to apply the Open Mod item to an item that has pre-existing modifiers on the item. (As it’s required.)

      • The second way is applying the Open Mod item to an item that has no modifiers. In this case, you will have to make a secondary modifier group so that the Mod Notes show on the item.

Creating an Open Modifier:

  1. Navigate to your Ecosystem and Organization in Canopy Classic. You can also access Canopy Classic by visiting your instance-menu.ordernext.com in Canopy 2.0. Then select the dropdown under your Venue Name by the upper left-hand corner and select Canopy Classic.

  2. Once in Classic, navigate to F&B → Global Items.
    • From here, scroll to the bottom of the page and select Create Items

  3. Under the creation page you will have the following options:

    • Name(Required): You can name the Open Modifier anything you want as it will not show on the POS, but it should be something you can easily identify. Such as, “Item Note” or “Special Requirements.”

    • Price(Required): Set the price to zero.

    • SKU: We suggest using VN001 as the SKU unless it’s already in use. You can count up in the digits or add them to the end.

    • Special Type: Select “Open Modifier”

  4. Once you select Submit, the Open Modifier will be created.
    • Note: As this is a Special Item type it will not display the item on the POS.

  5. Once submitted, you will need to navigate back to Global Items and the item we created and select ‘None’ under Category.

  6. Under Item Categorization select ‘Manage Modifiers.’

  7. From here select ‘+ Add New Category’ in the top right corner of the page.
    • You’ll be presented with a window to name the Modifier Group. These are the only settings you should modify, then select Create.

    • Note: Make sure to name the Open Mod group something that is easily identifiable. Such as, “Custom Item Note” or “Open Mod.”

  8. Your new Modifier Group will be added to the list. Select your group and an edit window will appear on the right side of the page.
    • In this window, select ‘Manage Items.’

      • On the next page, you will be presented with an Item List. From here search the Open Modifier that we created earlier.

      • When you see the item appear in the list, select 'ADD ITEM.'

  9. This will add the item to the list below the search field indicating the item has been added to the Modifier Group. At this point, the Open Modifier creation is completed, no saving at this point is necessary. Follow the next steps to add your newly created Open Modifier to a parent item.

Adding an Open Modifier to a Parent Item with no Existing Mods:

  1. We will start by navigating back to F&B → Global Items.
    • From here, scroll to the bottom of the page and select Create Items

      • Create a normal zero-priced item and name it ‘Modifier Note.’

      • Add this item to the same Location/Menu where you added your Open Modifier item.

  2. Once submitted navigate back to Global Items and follow steps 5 and 6 of “Creating an Open Modifier.”
    • Under Food Modifier Categories, proceed with following steps 7 and 8 of “Creating an Open Modifier.”

      • Except this time name the new group “Mod Note” and add the new regular item we just created to the group.

  3. Next, we will proceed with adding our two Modifier Groups to the Parent Item that we would like to use our Open Modifier Notes on.
    • We will start by navigating back to F&B → Global Items.

      • Search the Parent Item that you wish to add both Modifier Groups to and select ‘Edit Modifiers’ under Item Options.

  4. Under the Modifiers & Combos page check off both of your Modifier Groups and select ‘Update Modifiers.’

This concludes the creation of an Open Modifier and applying it to an item that contains no existing modifier groups. I recommend using the Virtual POS to test and make sure your Open Modifier is applied correctly to the item.

Adding an Open Modifier to an Item with Existing Mods:

  • This process is much simpler, all you need to do is follow steps 3 and 4 of “Adding an Open Modifier to a Parent Item with no Existing Mods.” The only difference is that you’re only adding the Open Modifier group that you created as the Parent Item you’re adding the group to should already have existing Modifier Groups.
