Overview of Tax Configurations
Canopy allows tax configurations in three ways:
- Same Tax Rate on All Items: Apply a single tax rate to all items in a category, such as Food or Merch.
- Multiple Tax Rates at the Item Level: Assign unique tax rates to individual items.
- Taxing by the Subtotal: Apply a Food Tax Rate or Merch Tax Rate to the subtotal, instead of item-by-item.
Note: In Canopy 2.0, tax configurations are managed through Menus > Items.
Accessing Tax Settings
Venue-Level Tax Configuration
To set tax configurations that apply to all locations within the venue:
- Go to F&B in the Canopy main menu.
- Select Venue Settings.
- Scroll down to find the Tax section.
- Click the expander arrow next to Tax to access configuration options.
Location-Level Tax Configuration
To set tax configurations that apply to a specific location:
- Go to F&B in the Canopy main menu.
- Select Locations.
- Select the service type hyperlink for the desired location.
- Go to the Settings tab at the top of the location page.
- Scroll down to the Tax section.
Menu-Level Tax Configuration
To set tax configurations that apply to a specific menu within a location:
- Go to F&B in the Canopy main menu.
- Select Locations.
- Select the service type hyperlink for the desired location.
- Select Menus.
- In the Menus section, select Settings for the desired menu.
- Scroll down to the Tax section and click the expander arrow.
Recommendation: Set the default tax configuration at the Venue level to ensure consistent settings across locations. The last update will take precedence, whether made at the Venue, Location, or Menu level.
Setting the Same Tax Rate on All Items
To configure a single tax rate for all items within a category, such as food or merchandise:
- Access the Tax section by following the steps in the Accessing Tax Settings section for Venue, Location, or Menu level.
- In the Tax section, configure the following:
- Tax By Item: Set to Yes.
- Tax Rate On Items: Set to No.
- Enter the tax rates as decimal values:
- Food Tax Rate: Enter the rate as a decimal (e.g., 0.07 for 7%).
- Merch Tax Rate: Enter the rate as a decimal (e.g., 0.07 for 7%).
- Select UPDATE to save changes.
Important: Enter all tax rates as decimal values.
Applying Multiple Tax Rates at the Item Level
To configure individual tax rates for items within a category:
- Access the Tax section following the instructions in the Accessing Tax Settings section.
- In the Tax section, set the following options:
- Tax By Item: Set to Yes.
- Tax Rate On Items: Set to Yes.
- To set individual tax rates for items:
- Go to F&B > Global Items.
- Locate each item and enter the tax rate as a decimal under the Tax Rate column.
- Select UPDATE to save item-level tax rates.
Important: Enter all tax rates as decimal values.
Taxing by the Subtotal
To apply a tax rate to the subtotal of a category:
- Access the Tax section as outlined in the Accessing Tax Settings section.
- In the Tax section, configure the following:
- Tax By Item: Set to No.
- Tax Rate On Items: Set to No.
- Enter the tax rates:
- Food Tax Rate: Enter the rate as a decimal (e.g., 0.07 for 7%).
- Merch Tax Rate: Enter the rate as a decimal (e.g., 0.07 for 7%).
- Select UPDATE to save changes.
Important: Enter all tax rates as decimal values.
